about

You Scare Me is the debut album by the Dutch artist Poor Thing. He concocts up genres, bad ideas and happy accidents. He eats them, digests them and serves the solidified result as a grotesque meal on a sonic plate of stinking beauty.

The album contains 9 notably well-structured tracks comprised of trippy industrial sounds, filtered white noise and disconnected melodies. Adventurous randomness that could only have been conjured up from within the cluttered mind of its creator and this particular creator only.

There might be a common thread running through the album though. From the poppy techno track 'Prototype People' to the wagneresque war march 'Intruders', Poor Thing often shapes the envelopes of his synths a little bit further to knock up the punchy distorted kicks and sounds a 909 could only dream of.

But 909s cannot dream, because they are drum machines, you’d probably argue. And you might even have a point there. But what if all of a sudden they became conscious entities? Would you still touch them with your fingers, even if they cried instead of producing a beat? Maybe you'd say 'poor thing, i will never touch you again without your consent'. But then again, you might say 'ethics don't apply to machines', and subsequently get electrocuted by the sea of tears interacting with its inner circuits. Or maybe you’d just be disappointed by this thing that since it started expressing its feelings it also started producing sloppy beats, just like a real drummer. Questions then arise. Can I still sell it online? And will it be able to regain its consciousness after I unplugged the machine for shipment? And if it doesn't, will I go to jail?

It's those matters that Poor Thing thinks about, sometimes. Hence the album’s title.

The portrait on the album cover may look like that of a real boy, in reality though, it is a generation of an artificial intelligence.

about

Poor Thing Haarlem, Netherlands

Poor Thing, sitting there behind his computer and cheap mono synth, all alone in his dark and cold laboratory. No one cares about him or his music. Truth be told, Mr Poor Thing doesn't care about them either. He just laughs hysterically while feeding on the tune that will ultimately destroy mankind. ... more
